11 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned For Children Under The Age Of 12

These days, it's not unusual to see children playing with portable electronics like tablets and cell phones. However, scientists advise against allowing children under the age of 12 to use these devices.

It is irrefutable that technology has improved and transformed our lives. But most of us are unaware of the impact these devices are having on our children. Limit how much time your child spends on or handles a tablet or cell phone because these gadgets may hinder their development.

According to research, technology has been causing harm to our kids. Despite knowing this many parents continue to allow their kids to use these devices without any restrictions. Such gadgets have allowed infants, toddlers and kids access and enter the viral world where there is absence of the key factors required for development, learning and behavior.

Here are the most important reasons why your child should not be allowed access to these handled gadgets:

1. Faster Brain Development

From age 0 to 2 to 21 years, the brain of your child will grow triple in size. It will keep developing at a very fast pace through these years. The development of brain in the early years will be based on environmental stimulus or the shortage of it. The stimulation for brain development because of overexposure to new technological innovations has been found to be linked with:

  • Excessive functions
  • Lack of attention
  • Cognitive delays
  • Enhanced impulsivity
  • Learning impairment
  • Reduction in ability for self regulation

2. Slowed Down Development

Current day technology reduces movement for both adults and children. This can cause delayed development in kids. Because of this, almost one in three kids entering school suffer from the following:

  • Delayed development
  • Negative impact on literacy
  • Negative impact on academic success

With movement, kids develop learning and attention based abilities. Keep in mind that technology should not be used to this level in kids below 12. Otherwise, it can prove to be harmful for the development and learning abilities of your child.

3. Widespread Obesity

Kids who have gadgets in their rooms are 30% more likely to suffer from obesity. 25% of all Canadian and 33% of all U.S. kids are considered to be obese. There are further complications of being obese.

Almost 30% of kids who is obese are likely to become diabetic. Such kids also have higher risks of heart attack and stroke. Overall, this can have a serious impact on the life expectancy of the child. It is a serious point that the current generation of kids (21st century) could be the first generation that may not be able to live longer than their parents.

4. Insufficient Sleep

Around 60% of all parents don’t keep an eye on the use of technology by their kids. Around 75% of children are allowed by their parents to use technology devices in their rooms. That’s 3 out of every 4 children. The age group 9 to 10 in this category suffer from sleep deprivation which further affects their grades.

5. Aggressive Behavior

When exposed to violent media, children can develop aggressive behavior. Children should not be exposed to visuals of various types of violence, including sexual and physical, such as in Grand Theft Auto V games. Such games and TV shows display murder, mutilation, torture, rape and sex.

Media violence has been classified by the U.S. government as Public Health Risk because it affects aggression in children. Media is also reporting increased usage of seclusion rooms and restraints for kids who have shown aggressive behavior.

6. Mental Illness

The over usage of technology has been found to become a casual factor in the increasing cases of:

  • Child anxiety
  • Depression
  • Attachment disorder
  • Autism
  • Attention deficit
  • Problematic child behavior
  • Psychosis
  • Bipolar disorder

One in six children in Canada have been diagnosed with some form of mental illness.

7. Digital Dementia

The fast supply of media content to kids’ brain is contributing to attention deficit and lack of concentration. It is also affecting their memory because the brain cuts the neuron tracks towards the frontal cortex. When your child cannot pay attention to tasks at hand, he/she cannot learn.

8. Addiction

Addition of more technology to your child’s life will detach you from your child. In the absence of parental attachment, kids become more attached to their devices. This can lead to addiction. According to studies, one out of eleven children between 8 and 18 are suffering from addiction to technology.

9. Emission of Radiation

The WHO has already classified cell phones to be category 2B risks due to the radiation emitted by them (May 2011). This makes them possible carcinogen.

Dr. Anthony Miller of the University of Toronto’s School of Public Health suggested in 2013, after his research, to reclassify exposure to radio frequency as 2A. 2A refers to ‘probably carcinogen’, which makes it an even bigger threat.

10. Negative Impact on Children’s Future

Kids raised on technology (and even receiving their education on it) are looking forward to a technological world that is not sustainable. It doesn’t have the power to teach your child the practical life lessons and skills required for survival. If you allow your child to overuse technology, it will have a negative impact on their future.

11. Eye Problems

When kids stare at screens for long hours, they will easily suffer from eye problems. It could cause the development of computer vision syndrome. When you put a limit to the amount of time they can spend on screen (30 minutes), it can help in preventing eye problems.

Healthy Pumpkin Spice Cake

Healthy Pumpkin Spice Cake

The pumpkin season is just beginning! So of course we had to bring you a healthy pumpkin cake recipe! If you and your kids are going to enjoy some pumpkin desserts, it might as well be just a little bit healthier. There seems to be two crowds – those you love pumpkin and those who don’t. Which team do you side with?

Why is this Pumpkin Spice Cake healthier?

I swapped out the butter for coconut oil and we use maple syrup instead of sugar. It’s not a sweet cake anyways and with a cup of pumpkin it’s basically a vegetable cake… right? The frosting is also made with low fat cream cheese, greek yogurt and just a liiiittle bit of sugar. Usually frosting is more than half sugar, but we took a different approach with our Healthy Pumpkin Spice Cake.

Pumpkin itself is actually a nutrition powerhouse. Here are a few reasons why you should add pumpkin to your food:
  • Vitamin A. Pumpkin is packed full of vitamin A which promotes good vision and also helps form and maintain healthy skin.
  • Fiber. Pumpkin is an often-overlooked source of fiber, but with three grams per one-cup serving and only 49 calories, it can keep you feeling full for longer on fewer calories.
  • Potassium. You might have heard of bananas being called nature’s energy bar? That is because potassium refuels your body. Turns out, a cup of cooked pumpkin has more of the refueling nutrient potassium, with 564 milligrams compared with banana’s 422.
  • Vitamin C.

The Perfect Size

This recipe makes an 8X8 inch pan which is perfect for your family! everyone gets a piece tonight and a piece tomorrow and then it’s gone! I don’t know about you, but when I make a cake in a casserole dish and there are so many leftovers I end up eating cake for days! It’s so terrible! So just make the perfect amount instead!

Tips for Baking our Healthy Pumpkin Spice Cake

The only thing to really watch out for is your coconut oil! Make sure you melt it before you use it and mix it with your room temperature pumpkin puree first. This way, the coconut oil has a better chance to incorporate evenly into the cake! If you add a cold egg to the coconut oil it will make the oil solidify and then you’ll get chunks of coconut oil in your cake. If that happens, it’s not the worst thing! Your cake will just look very…bumpy when you pull it out of the oven. Once you frost it, it will look and taste great!

Healthy Pumpkin Spice Cake

Serves: 12
Serving Size = 1 piece
Prep Time: 7 m
Cook Time: 20 m

Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cup – flour, whole wheat
  • 1 teaspoon – cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon – pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon – baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon – baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon – salt
  • 1 tablespoon – coconut oil
  • 1 cup – pumpkin, canned
  • 1 large – egg
  • 1 tbsp – vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup – maple syrup, pureFrosting
  • 4 ounce – cream cheese, low fat
  • 1/2 cup (8 fl oz) – Greek yogurt, vanilla
  • 1/4 cup unsifted – powdered sugar

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line an 8X8 inch pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl combine your melted coconut oil and pumpkin puree. Do this first so the coconut oil is evenly dispersed. Add you room temperature egg, vanilla and maple syrup. Stir until combined.
  4. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir just until combined. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until an inserted knife comes out clean.
  5. Frosting: Combine cold cream cheese, greek yogurt, and powdered sugar. Beat until smooth. Frost cake. The frosting won't be as stiff as normal frosting because there's less sugar to thicken it. So I refrigerated my cake to thicken the frosting.

Healthy Peanut Butter Fruit Dip

Healthy Peanut Butter Fruit Dip

Looking for the perfect dip for your fruit? This Peanut Butter Dip only takes 5 minutes to whip up with a handful of simple ingredients. The base of this dip is a natural peanut butter, making it as healthy as it is yummy. It is a great addition for any fruit tray you are making.

A fruit dip with no added sugar

This healthy peanut butter fruit dip is seriously so easy to make it’s ridiculously good. Just four simple ingredients, perfect for all your apples that will be falling off your trees as fall gets closer. Did I mention that this fruit dip has no added sugar so it’s healthy and your kids will think they are eating a dessert?

A simple dip to make with only 4 ingredients

Add your favorite all natural peanut butter, coconut milk, honey (omit if your peanut butter is already sweetened) and vanilla together in a bowl. Whisk together until it is smooth. I like to use a crunchy peanut butter, but feel free to use a creamy if that is what your children like. Cut your apples and pears into wedges and bananas into slices. Dip away! See, I told you that it was simple!
Provides protein and healthy fats

A piece of fruit added with this dip is an easy and yummy after school snack. It provides both protein and healthy fats, served along with your fruit. This will give your kids the energy they need after school while doing homework, and it will keep them more satisfied until dinner time unlike typical sugary after school snacks. A balanced snack should always contain a fruit/veggie, a protein and a grain. You could dip pretzels, or even crackers in this dip also!

Green Peach Smoothie for Kids

Green Peach Smoothie for Kids

The tastiest green peach smoothie you’ll ever have! Peaches, banana, almond milk and spinach to make it bright green and super healthy. Your kids will love this!

Green and Sweet

I used to be afraid of green smoothies. That’s right–me! It wasn’t until two years ago that I decided to take the plunge and wow was I missing out! Ever since, I’ve have at least five green smoothies a week! They’re quick and easy to make and it’s a great way to get your leafy greens. But it’s true, if you don’t know what you’re doing you can put in too much spinach or kale and not enough fruit to get the right balance, but that’s why it’s good to start with a recipe. This recipe is delicious and I’ve made it every day since! I ran out of peaches and made it with just bananas and it was still amazing!

Do you have a bunch of rowdy boys? Call this a Hulk smoothie! They’ll be drinking this and flexing their muscles for you all day long! If you have pretty in pink girls, you can always sneak this smoothie into a colored cup and serve it with the straw if you’re afraid the green might spook them! It’s plenty sweet and tasty from the peaches and banana, so as soon as they take a sip they’ll be begging for more of this Green Peach Smoothie!

Need More Protein?

I put the option of adding greek yogurt in the recipe in case you need to add some more protein as an after soccer practice boost. You can also swap out the almond milk for dairy milk, cashew milk or something else that you have in the fridge. It makes a perfect breakfast on the go as well! I like to drink mine in a plastic tumbler with a straw on my way to meetings in the morning.

Plan Ahead

If you love this recipe as much as I do, stock up on fresh peaches from Costco or anywhere else you may get them on sale! You can slice them up at home and freeze them yourself so you can save a few pennies and make this smoothie all year long. If you want to make it even sweeter, add a few pieces of pineapple!
