3 Tips For Raising A Highly Sensitive Child

3 Tips For Raising A Highly Sensitive Child

The internet has recently been set ablaze with articles about "Highly Sensitive People".

The term was coined by Dr. Elaine Aron in 1996 with the release of her groundbreaking book, The Highly Sensitive Person. In recent months outlets such as The Huffington Post and Wall Street Journal have published articles about the inherited trait. It is wonderful that many highly sensitive adults are receiving validation they they are not "too sensitive" or "overly emotional", messages many HSPs receive as children.

If you are raising a Highly Sensitive Child it is helpful to know that 15-20% of the population is born with this genetic trait and from an evolutionary perspective, it is valuable asset. Here are some tips to help your highly sensitive child thrive:

1. Allow your child to feel their feelings.

The stronger the sensitivity, the deeper the capacity to feel. Highly Sensitive Children have heightened senses; odors and flavors are more pungent and minor physical sensations are more noticeable. Your HSC may not be able to eat a food that "smells yucky" or looks (to them) unappetizing. They might complain that their clothing tags are itchy or the seams on their socks bother them.

Your Highly Sensitive Child feels BIG emotions. They experience ecstatic joy and bliss and deep pain and sadness. Often these children are mislabeled as "big reactors" and "overly dramatic" which are inaccurate and damaging to a HSC's self-esteem. Many sensitive children intuit that they are different from others. When children are given the message that they are "too much" or "not enough" they begin to believe that they are flawed.

Their perceptions create their reality. You can support them by changing the way you respond to them. This begins with you no longer having to struggle to understand why your child doesn't want to eat his sandwich or wear her socks "” something about it just doesn't feel right.

2. Validate your child's experience.

Picture this: You have a long day at work. On your way home you get pulled over for speeding and issued a ticket. As you walk in the door your spouse asks for the eggs you picked up at the market, only to realize you forgot because you were flustered from the ticket.

What do you need in that moment?

A lecture about how irresponsible and forgetful you are? Or would you prefer compassion and understanding?

These sensitive ones come in hardwired to feel intensely. Rather than convincing them that what they are feeling is inappropriate, try to honor their experience. "That looks and smells yucky to you." Imagine experiencing life in a such a way that seemingly "˜little things' feel totally overwhelming.

Once you've validated their feelings you can help them move past the immediate challenge. "Your socks really bother your toes, how about if we turn them inside out so the seams are on the outside?" or "Those socks feel uncomfortable for you, when we get inside you can take them off and walk barefoot."

Trying to change a HSC's feelings does not work. Validating their feelings and then offering a solution is the key to teaching them healthy self-empowerment and boosting their self-esteem! Sometimes they just need you to compassionately 'hear' them, even if you can't come up with a fix.

3. Honor your child's ability to pick up on subtle energy.

In the same way that a dog can hear a whistle that is silent to humans, HSC tend to pick up on things that are imperceivable to others. They are susceptible to feeling the "vibes" of others, either putting them at ease or making them feel uncomfortable. As they learn to hear their intuition they may become more adamant about doing what feels right to them, even if it seems illogical to you.

As a little girl, I remember hiding in my room when my grandma came over to visit. Her energy felt so intense to me that I had to take some time before I could approach her. Since my parents understood my sensitive temperament they didn't force me to be "a nice girl" and come out of my retreat before I felt comfortable. By honoring my personal process they allowed me to develop a relationship with my inner voice that is my guiding light as an adult.

As a coach for parents of Highly Sensitive Children I often hear moms and dads worry the world will "not change to fit their child." I love to remind them that while they are correct, their children did not come forth to conform to this world. Sensitives are change makers and creators. They aren't concerned about fitting in with the status quo; they move to the beat of their own drum and in their unique process they teach the world to play a new rhythm.

Why Is It Good For The Baby To Sleep With The Mother?

Numerous studies have shown that the baby’s heart is under much greater stress if the child has to sleep alone.

That is why experts recommend that mothers sleep in the same bed or at least in the same room with the baby until the third year of its birth.

Experts also claim that babies who fall asleep at their mothers’ breasts sleep better than those who sleep in a cradle or crib. This research was conducted at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and shows that if they sleep apart, mother and child have a harder time bonding.

Interestingly, researchers emphasize that sleeping separated from mothers affects the development of the brain of babies and can be reflected in the form of behavioral problems later in life.

However, scientists recommend that the baby sleeps on the mother’s breast only when she is awake, and the rest of the time he sleeps in a crib or cradle, so that the mother does not accidentally injure him during sleep.

As much as you enjoy fries and burgers, paediatricians warn against eating ultra-processed or fast food during pregnancy since it poses health concerns to the foetus.

According to a University of Washington School of Medicine study published last month in the journal Environment International, the risk comes not only from fat and calories but also from chemicals that frequently end up in hamburgers and fries.

Known as phthalates, these chemicals are often released from fast food wrappers or workers’ protective gloves and have been linked to autism, ADHD, premature birth and low birth weight.

When food is contaminated with these harmful microplasticizers, the chemicals can enter a pregnant woman’s bloodstream.

“When pregnant women are exposed to this chemical, it can cross the placenta and enter the foetal circulation,” explained the study’s lead author, paediatrician Sheela Satyanarayana.

Researchers studied over 1,000 pregnant women in their second trimester and discovered that eating more ultra-processed meals was connected with greater quantities of one of the most common and hazardous phthalates. The researchers cautioned that, in addition to traditional fast foods like fries, hamburgers, and soda, ready-made cake mixes pose considerable danger.

Satyanarayana advises pregnant women to avoid fast and processed foods as much as possible. Instead, instead of fat and sugar, they should consume fruits, vegetables, lean meats and energy bars made with organic fruits, such as dates.

Never Let Your Kids Sit In The “W” Position. Here’s Why!

Never Let Your Kids Sit In The “W” Position. Here’s Why!

Never Let Your Kids Sit In The “W” Position. Here’s Why!

W-sitting is a commonly used position by children. In this position, children sit on their bottoms, with their knees bent, feet tucked under, and their legs splayed out to the side in what looks like a “W”. This is a normal sitting position because children feel supported and secure. Many parents do not know or recognize the danger of letting a child sit like this for too long.

Sitting in a “W” position too often or for too long can negatively impact a child’s development and growth patterns.

The Negative Effects of “W-Sitting” Include:

  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Delayed Development of Postural Control and Stability
  • Delayed Development of Refined Motor Skills

These are the primary reasons why having a child sit in this position is strongly discouraged. We want our children to grow strong and this type of sitting prevents that. It also puts unecessary strain on the body.

Exclusive “W-Sitting” Puts Undue Stress On:

  • The Hip Abductors
  • Hamstrings
  • Internal Rotators
  • Heel Cords

Dislocation is easy and common with children who commonly sit in this position. Also, sitting in this position leads to shortened or tightened muscles. This can affect development of motor skills, balance, and coordination. Also, “W-sitting” results in less need for stability, postural control, and weight shift during play. This weakens the trunk muscles or hinders their development.

The only way to stop or fix this poor seating habit is with consistency. Teach the child how to sit correctly and remind them of how to sit on the floor. One may also invest in a small desk or table with a chair.

For anyone who may get upset at this post, please reference this original and this  child development article response. Not all “W” sitters will have severe issues but it is still not recommended, as it can elevate risks.

Reflexology is a traditional Chinese cultural practice that dates back thousands of years. But it has recently gained a lot of recognition in the West as a valid medical procedure that can be used to treat a wide range of physical conditions.

Reflexology is an ideal method for soothing babies because it's likely the safest and most natural form of treatment out there. Babies will frequently react to physical pain by crying because they are unable to express to you what is bothering them. Reflexology offers a useful method for figuring out what your baby is going through as well as how to address it.

Reflexology Foot Guide for Babies

Press These Points On Your Baby’s Feet To Make Them Stop Crying Immediately

Babies are said to be much more responsive to reflexology than full-grown adults. This is mainly because they are more receptive to physical touch in general. When a baby or child is in distress, it is our natural response to comfort them physically by holding them, rubbing their back etc. This makes reflexology the perfect treatment for them.

Reflexology is the application of pressure to certain points on the body, mainly focused on the feet. This is said to help treat a variety of health problems associated with their corresponding body parts. The above guide shows these body parts, and which area of the baby’s feet that affect them.

Head/Teeth

To treat problems involving the head and teeth, the tips of the toes are the parts of the foot that need to be rubbed. This is great for treating many health issues that occur above the neck, such as ear infections. It is especially helpful when the baby is teething, as performing reflexology on the tips of the toes can help to reduce the pain caused by this.

Sinuses

The area on the foot associated with sinuses is in the center of the “Head/Teeth” area, similar to the placement of the sinuses in our heads, which is right in the center. Applying pressure to the center of a child’s toes can help reduce the severity of a variety of sinus problems ranging from a runny nose to the common cold and other respiratory problems. Although this is by no means a cure for any illness, it is said to reduce their symptoms and make them more bearable.

Chest

The chest area on the feet is the top of the foot that touches the ground, above the arch. Performing reflexology on this area provides similar effects to the sinus area, in that it relieves congestion. However, this area relieves congestion in the chest rather than the sinuses, making it effective for treating chronic coughs or colds that cause phlegm build ups. In fact, several studies have found reflexology to be very effective at reducing all forms of congestion.

Solar Plexus

The solar plexus is a complex collection of nerves located between the stomach and the lungs. It is hard to narrow down the cause of solar plexus pain due to its location and variety of nerve endings, however it can be treated by performing reflexology near the upper area of the arch of the foot. This is the area right before the arch ends and the foot meets the ground.

Upper & Lower Abdomen

The area of the foot that corresponds with the abdomen is the entire arch of the foot. The upper abdomen correlates with the upper half of the arch. Performing reflexology on this area of the baby’s foot can help with digestive issues such as bowel obstruction and heartburn.

The lower abdomen correlates with the lower half of the arch. Performing reflexology on this area can help with post-digestive issues such as constipation and bloating, which may be factors behind your baby’s discomfort.

Pelvis

The heels of a baby’s foot corresponds with their pelvic area. Issues that commonly effect the pelvic area of a baby include muscle tightness and postural problems. This can be treated by applying pressure to the heel area of the foot.

In conclusion, remember that reflexology is only effective at reducing pain caused by certain conditions and other specific symptoms such as congestion. It is by no means a “cure-all” for certain diseases and should not replace proper medical attention that your baby would require if suffering from a serious condition. It is simply meant to increase their comfort, as well as yours, during periods of pain and stress.

Baby Sleep Problems? 20 Mistakes Parents Make to Ruin Their Baby's Sleep

Baby Sleep Problems? 20 Mistakes Parents Make to Ruin Their Baby's Sleep

Baby Sleep Problems? 20 Mistakes Parents Make to Ruin Their Baby's Sleep

Babies having trouble sleeping? Are you committing one of these 20 common parental mistakes that might genuinely disrupt your child's sleep?

It's far too simple to mess up parenting. Every day, we all make the same mistakes, but that doesn't mean we can't educate ourselves to avoid them in the future. If your child doesn't always "sleep like a baby," you may need to take note of the 20 unintentional blunders other parents make when their children are trying to go to sleep.

Top 20 Parenting Mistakes that Cause Baby Sleep Problems

 1.  Waiting too long to put the baby down for a nap.

How many times have you heard a baby screaming in public only to hear the parent say, “Oh, she’s tired.” That is often the correct diagnosis, but you don’t have to wait until your baby is screaming for rest. In fact, they would probably appreciate you recognizing their exhaustion before they get that worked up. Pay enough attention, and you will learn your little one’s subtle cues that it’s time to find a quiet place, turn down the lights, and cuddle up in a safe, familiar environment.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for some of the most common ways babies say, “I’m sleepy,”

  • Change in facial expression
  • Rubbing eyes
  • Staring into space
  • Clenched fists
  • yawning

2.  Underestimating the power of a bedtime routine. (This is a BIG ONE!)

There was a time when children of all ages were put to bed at the same time every night with a warm bath, story time and night light. Parents are much busier today, and women are more likely to have full-time jobs, businesses to run and other responsibilities that go beyond managing the home and tending to the kids. This means that more parents are doing away with simple parenting strategies like a consistent bedtime schedule.

This is always a mistake because babies need consistency and routine to sleep well (Gaylor 2005.) They naturally adapt to their schedule, and they start to feel tired around that time. This makes it much easier to get the little one to sleep, and it often means longer snooze periods so that parents get more rest as well. Do everyone a favor and develop a bedtime routine that is performed with consistency at the same time each day.

3.  Skipping the bedtime routine (Even “Just this once.”)

Even when parents do understand the value of a routine for bedtime, there are times when they may find it convenient to keep the baby up later or try to get the little one to sleep a bit early. The end result is frustration as the baby grows tired and starts to throw a fit the later it gets. Many babies will simply refuse to sleep earlier because their body tells them that it’s still play time.

It’s usually easier to work social events around the baby’s schedule rather than throwing your baby’s schedule out the window. If you have to stay out later at times, make sure that you have a stroller, portable bed, or another safe place where your little one can rest if needed. You should expect it to take a night or two for the baby to readjust to your bedtime routine once their schedule is disrupted.

Not only that studies indicate that babies and young children who lack regular bedtime routines have more behavior problems (Gaylor, 2005, (Komada 2010 ). In addition, toddlers who stick with regular bedtime routines may sleep longer at night (Molfese, 2016).

4.  Letting the baby rely on one parent or caregiver.

This is a big one and can occur for many reasons. A stay-at-home parent may feel that they have to do it all because they don’t want to bother their spouse, who is already stressed out from work and other issues beyond the home. Other parents may simply feel that no one can take care of their baby better than they can. Regardless of the rationale, you have to let your spouse or another trustworthy adult step in and help when you’re overwhelmed or simply exhausted. If you don’t, you will end up making mistakes that interrupt your baby’s sleep or even lead to ongoing sleep problems that last days, weeks or even years.

5.  Responding to EVERY little sound or stirring.

Babies naturally make sounds while they’re sleeping, and there is no reason to respond to most of them. It’s possible that your baby is dreaming or simply cycling through different stages of sleep that may leave them more alert at certain times during the night. If you rush into the room and scoop them up each time they make a sound, you will wake them up unintentionally. (Burham , 2005)

Try to relax and respond only when you’re certain that your baby is awake or there is another problem that you need to address. With time, you will learn to recognize the sounds that your baby makes while sleeping and awake. You may also find that your baby sometimes soothes him or herself back to sleep without your assistance. This is a healthy development that you want to encourage.

6.  Trying to get the baby on a schedule while the rest of the household follows a different tune.

Would you be able to sleep if there were a party happening right outside your door? Probably not, and your baby can’t either. If the rest of your household is active when you want your baby to sleep, make sure that the action is happening away from the baby’s bedroom. Using a sound machine or app to play white noise or another soothing sound in the nursery may help, but everyone in the family should be mindful of the baby’s need to rest. Once the baby hears something that says others are awake, they will naturally want to know what’s going on and cause baby sleep problems for the rest of the night!

7.  Co-sleeping out of exhaustion rather than a mindful decision to do so.

Have you ever been so exhausted by a baby who just would not go or stay to sleep that you tucked them in next to you? Many fussy babies will calm down and go to sleep if they have the warmth and safety of a parent, but this can have a long-lasting impact on your baby’s sleep habits. They may get the message that fussing long enough gets them into your bed, and they want to be in your bed.

While we are BIG fans of co-sleeping, t’s best to remain consistent with your normal sleep routines even if it means you and your spouse must tag team throughout the night when the baby just doesn’t want to sleep. Giving in on a night of exhaustion could easily lead to a toddler who just won’t sleep on his or her own. The years tick by so quickly, and this habit is instilled so easily.

8.  Allowing too much daytime sleep due to unstructured schedules.

Are you a freedom-loving parent who doesn’t care much for schedules and routines? You may naturally allow your baby to fall into that free lifestyle, but they may not always take to it as naturally. When you allow too much sleep during the day, you may mistakenly create a night owl (Nakagawa, 2016) who just doesn’t want to turn down when you’re tired. You may need to set some boundaries, wake a baby who is sleeping too long at the wrong times, and pick a consistent bedtime so that your baby has the structure that he or she needs to sleep well.

9.  Not working hard enough to entertain the baby during wakeful hours.

How often does your baby receive mental and physical stimulation throughout the day? If they are left sitting without interaction with others for too long, they can get bored just like adults with nothing to do. Make sure that your baby has lots of time to talk to you, sing to great music, stretch their muscles with tummy time, read books, and get outdoors to learn about the bigger world. You will be rewarded with a more tired baby ready for nighttime.

10.  Not letting baby learn to self-soothe.

Sleep-dependent babies are unable or unwilling to soothe themselves to sleep. They are so used to being rocked, bounced, swung, or massaged to sleep that they will not sleep without that comfort. In some cases, those loving behaviors become cues that tell the baby it’s time to sleep. In other cases, the baby simply associates that comfort with sleep because it is all that they have ever known.

You will naturally soothe your baby to sleep in the newborn stage because it’s comforting for you both, but make sure that you give your baby a chance to soothe him or herself to sleep at least part time. This doesn’t mean letting a baby scream and cry until they are too tired to continue. It simply means getting the baby comfortable and happy at their expected sleep time, and then allowing them to fall asleep in their own way. The earlier you start, the more accustomed to independent sleep your baby will become. (Burham , 2005)

11.  Allowing conflicting sleep schedules when traveling between two homes.

Does your baby spend time with you, and then go to another parent’s house to spend time with them? Do they go to the sitter’s house or grandma’s house during the day and then come home with you in the evening and on weekends? If there is a split living situation or they spend a lot of time with a sitter, make sure that everyone involved is sticking to the same routine and time schedule. This will prevent your baby from feeling confused and restless when going through those frequent transitions.  Consistency is key!!!

12.  Not addressing the baby’s discomfort right away.

While you don’t want to rush to your baby’s side and start changing their diaper, clothing, booties, and sheets each time they make a sound, there are times when you need to check on the baby and take care of issues that may be causing discomfort. Perhaps a fussy baby has a full diaper or has grown too warm when bundled up for the night. Taking care of those discomforts will likely allow the baby to go right back to sleep.

Once you discover something that makes your baby uncomfortable, find ways to avoid that in the future. It can take time to learn how bundled up a baby needs to be in order to maintain a comfortable body temperature through the night, and every child is different in how they like to sleep.

13.  Not coordinating meal times and bed times.

If there is one simple thing that you can do to help your baby adjust to a normal sleeping habit, it’s to sync up feedings and naptimes. Babies naturally get tired as their bellies fill, so it’s easier to get them to sleep right after a feeding.  (You may even wake to breastfeed your baby to sleep if that works for you!)  The problem is that many parents don’t stick to routine feeding times, and that throws off the sleep schedule as well. Consistency is key to all aspects of your baby’s schedule. (Rinne, 1990)

14.  Assuming that late nights will equal late mornings.

So you want to keep your baby up late so YOU can sleep in tomorrow?  Guess what?  It doesn’t usually work like that until they are teenagers!  Some parents wrongfully assume that they can keep their babies up late at night so that they will sleep in later in the morning. It just isn’t reality for many babies. It’s especially likely to backfire if your baby is otherwise accustomed to a consistent sleep schedule. They will likely wake up around the same time despite the late night, but they will be especially cranky due to the lack of sleep. Again, working around your baby’s sleep schedule is always easier than trying to manipulate it.

15.  Not understanding how much sleep a baby actually needs at each age.

Many parents worry that their babies are sleeping too much or too little, but they don’t actually know what is normal for their baby’s age group. You can always ask your pediatrician about this at each checkup, but it’s worth doing some research of your own to learn the general guidelines. Just keep in mind that every baby is different, so your little one may just need a little less or a bit more than other babies. If you’re concerned that your baby has a deeper issue that is interrupting their sleep or causing them to sleep too much, see your doctor immediately.

16.  Blocking out the sunlight or noise.

Some parents try to make it perfectly quiet and dark each time baby sleeps.  Guess what?  That is not ideal and will teach the baby to wake up at any little sound they hear or any time there is a little bit of light.  We would even suggest a little white noise in baby’s room so they do NOT get used to silence to sleep.

17.  Giving up before the baby has time to adjust to new routines or expectations.

Have you ever heard that most people give up just when they are due for a big success? This concept applies to training a baby to sleep well. If you need to make an adjustment to the baby’s schedule or want to instill healthy habits that you didn’t acknowledge earlier in the baby’s life, it can take some time for the baby to get on board. If you remain consistent, it will eventually work, so don’t give up.

18.  Switching from the crib to the daybed or toddler bed too early.

Many parents are eager for those big milestones, and this transition to a bed is one of them. In some cases, parents want to move the older child to a bigger bed so that the crib is ready for a new baby. Unfortunately, you will be rewarded with a confused, uncomfortable, or distressed tot if you try to make the move too soon. Wait until your baby is crawling out of the crib, is two years old, or is showing other signs of maturity that tell you they are ready. Don’t rush the milestones because they’re sweeter when they come in their own time.

19.  Bringing in the toddler bed without warning.

Most children don’t respond well to sudden change. As ready as you may feel for the toddler bed to come into play, your child may need some time to understand what is happening and why. Start by discussing what a big boy or girl bed is, what it’s like to sleep in one, and how exciting it is to move out of the crib to a bed that allows more freedom. When you feel that your child is ready, introduce the new bed. It’s up to you whether you gradually wean him or her away from the crib or if you go cold turkey.

20.  Listening to others rather than YOUR intuition, common sense and reputable sources.

Most parents find that they are in sync with their babies and can take impressively accurate guesses at what they need most of the time. Unfortunately, new parents often assume that others with more experience know better. Even parents with years of experience often second guess their intuitive beliefs. This is why so many parents try what they hear from other people even though it doesn’t usually work for their babies.

Most parents eventually learn to listen to their gut instinct or find a reputable source while tuning out the crowd, but you can save yourself some time by deciding right now to give your parental intuition more value. That doesn’t mean that you never ask other parents for advice or try what has worked for a friend. It just means that you listen to your instincts and educate yourself so that you’re not just following others blindly.

If you want the term “sleep like a baby” or to mean hours of uninterrupted snooze time, tweaking your bedtime routines with some of these tips may help to get your baby to sleep through the night. Just remember that every parent must find what works for their baby, and no two babies are the same!
Never Let People Kiss Your Baby’s Lips! Here Is Why…

Never Let People Kiss Your Baby’s Lips! Here Is Why…

Never Let People Kiss Your Baby’s Lips! Here Is Why…

If you're a parent, you realize that nothing is more important than preserving your child's health. When a friend informs you that Jimmy has a cold, Nothing is frightening, but we can still go.

Or you go to the park for a play date with healthy children and babies and notice that one of the children is coughing and has green snot on their nose.

Or the dinner guest shows up and says, "Kids won't eat; we've been a little under the weather all week."
No, no, never!

If your kids are sick, never send them to kindergarten. Do not show for play dates. Do not kiss my kids or play with them. Do not spread germs, I need to avoid a week of taking care of sicknesses, vomiting and paying for childcare. And I, too, want some rest, not being in bed sick.

You think this is nothing but this is more than that. You think moms are paranoid when they see the doctor rushing and wrap the kids in wool and cotton, germs are everywhere and flu too, but you can’t keep kids in a bubble forever.

You just need to read a horror story like the UK mom Claire Henderson. She had a newborn girl Brooke and she got kissed on the mouth. The baby spent 5 days in hospital with herpes on the cheeks, lips and chin.

But, she was lucky. Cold sores can be deadly for newborns under 3 months, as Queensland showed last year; Mackay baby Eloise Lampton died of it days after the birth.

The lesson is, no kisses allowed on the baby’s lips! Even if the person looks healthy, warns Claire Henderson.

If someone has cold sore, let them know to keep the distance.

Here is the question, why you would visit an innocent, healthy, fragile being with cold sores? Why kiss even?! And the lips?!

No excuse for that. For the first 6 weeks, the baby has no immunity for the germs that we carry daily. For you it is just runny nose or ugly sore. But for the baby and its family it means life or death!

Every baby has the right to develop healthy.

I tried recently to visit friends that have a baby, but we all must wait until the baby is at least 6 weeks old.

This is not heard often, but this has to be a rule. It is better to say how you feel, instead of politely endanger the health of a loved one.

No more judging over protective parents, there is a reason for fearing over the kid’s health. give your baby a chance to be really healthy and no guilt feeling for that.

No more newborn kisses on the lips. No more sickish kids around the baby. And if your kids are sick , do not visit.

No politeness if the kids’ health is at risk.

Why You Should Never Let Anyone Kiss Your Baby on the Lips

We are all the same when it comes to defending our little ones.

Your baby's body may have even the smallest scratch, and a mild cough may cause you to have sleepless nights. Taking care of children is not simple. However, it's the most rewarding job in the world for a parent.

It is only natural that parents absolutely love it when others dote on their infants, calling them “cute”, “adorable” and many more befitting adjectives.

When it comes to protecting our little ones, we are all the same.

Even a tiny scratch on your baby’s body may give you sleepless nights and a slight cough might trigger all sorts of worrisome thoughts. It’s not easy caring for a child. But for a parent, it’s the most fulfilling job in the world.

It is only natural that parents absolutely love it when others dote on their infants, calling them “cute”, “adorable” and many more befitting adjectives.

Yes, if you allow people to kiss your baby on the lips, you are exposing them to a grave degree of danger.

Case studies

In September 2015, British mother Claire Henderson shared a photo of her 1-month-old daughter Brooke with a condition that was clearly visible in her lips and face. She also included a warning that would shock many new parents to their very core.

In the hospital, Brooke received a kiss on the lips from a stranger. Little Brooke had been kissed by the stranger, who at the time had no idea that she was carrying the herpes simplex virus and had unintentionally exposed Brooke to it.

Even though the herpes simplex virus does not cause a major illness in adults, it is unlikely to do so in infants.“Please share this with every new mum and pregnant woman you know,” Brooke’s mom wrote on her Facebook post. “Before 3 months old, a baby cannot fight the herpes virus. If a baby contracts this, it can cause liver and brain damage and lead to death.”

“…DO NOT let anyone kiss your new-born’s mouth, even if they don’t look like they have a cold sore – 85% of the population carry the virus. And if someone had a cold sore ask them to stay away until it has gone. Everyone who I have spoken to had not heard of this before and so I felt it was important to share Brooke’s story and raise awareness to stop anyone else going through what we have this week,” she further wrote.

In another similarly devastating case, Charlotte and Mohamed lost their 11-day-old baby girl, Mira, in 2008 after she developed a cold sore on her lower lip and succumbed to the herpes simplex virus a few days later.

No amount of clarity was achieved in the case of Mira and how she came to contract the virus. What did, however, become certain was this: There is a gross lack of awareness about this issue and it needs to be addressed by the medical community.

In another tragedy, 2-month-old Kaiden McCormick succumbed to multiple organ failure after contracting the herpes simplex virus from his father through mouth-to-mouth kissing in 2013.

What is the herpes simplex virus?

Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) is an extremely contagious disease and highly common around the world.

Although HSV-1 can also affect the genitals, it is primarily an oral disease that affects the lips, mouth and often the face. It manifests in symptoms known as cold sores that first begin to appear on the lips and in or around the mouth.

It usually occurs through mouth-to-mouth contact and is extremely common in children.

Adults with HSV-1 may feel a burning or itching sensation around the mouth before developing the cold sores.

However, even before these symptoms begin to present themselves, the virus may well be settled in the person’s system, and any oral contact can transfer the virus to someone else.

Therefore, even if adults do not complain of or display such symptoms, mouth-to-mouth contact with an infant should still be a strict NO-NO.

According to the World Health Organization, 67 percent of people under the age of 50 are infected with HSV-1.

What symptoms can I look for in my baby?

Symptoms of HSV-1 in babies might be as follows:

  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Itching and/or burning around the mouth or lips (Does your child pull away and begin crying during breastfeeding, or when the lips or mouth come in contact with an object, or when you touch them?)
  • Floppiness (of the body)
  • Redness of the gums
  • Swollen, tender lymph glands
  • Cold sores (on, inside or around the lips and/or mouth; may also occur on the face)

However, it is important to note that these symptoms often only begin to occur when the disease has significantly progressed in the infant, often becoming untreatable. This is the reason HSV-1 is largely referred to as the asymptomatic virus.

What can happen to my child if she or he gets the virus?

Although the cold sores in themselves are not fatal, the infection can spread to your infant’s other organs, such as the brain, liver and stomach, causing severe and often irreparable damage. It can spread even before the common cold sore symptoms appear.

It is the leading cause of fulminating visceral disease, a disease of the nervous system, and hepatitis in infants.

Hence, HSV-1 presents a high risk of being fatal to any infant under 3 months of age.

How can I protect my child from this deadly virus?

Prevention is better than the cure.

In no other context does this saying fit better than the one discussed in this article. In relation to HSV-1, prevention is ABSOLUTELY better than the cure. In fact, it is vital to ensuring your baby steers clear of an infection that could risk his or her life.

As repeatedly mentioned in this article, this virus can often be asymptomatic and, therefore, invisible to the naked eye until it is too late.

Hence, here’s what you should do: WARN EVERYONE YOU MEET TO NOT KISS YOUR BABY ON THE LIPS, no matter how irresistible they may find him or her!

After you do so, inform them of the risks of doing so, the reported and recorded dangers of this practice, and the importance of being aware of it for the sake of our children’s safety, health and longevity.

Oh, and always keep a hand sanitizer handy whenever you have visitors around your baby. It may annoy them a tad, having to squirt sanitizing liquid on their palms each time they visit, but if doing so protects your baby, then being labelled the “neurotic parent(s)” is a risk you have to take!
