There are several ways to lose stubborn fat like the nutritious diet, healthy lifestyle, exercising, and more. It is a saturated oil and is made up of medium chain fatty acids which are better than longer chain acids and have a beneficial effect on weight management. It has ample properties which make it a perfect ingredient for losing weight. But, is it really an effective and safe way to reduce weight? Are there any side effects? What are the dosages? Let’s have a look.

How does Coconut Oil Help Lose Weight?

1. Controls Blood Sugar Level

Blood sugar level is also one of the reasons behind excess weight. It is essential that your sugar level is balanced while you lose weight. As both high and low sugar levels are risky and can be health threatening. It promotes weight loss by controlling the production and use of insulin, treating diabetes in turn. Coconut oil provides more glucose to the body and helps shed extra pounds.

2. Balances Hormones

Your hormones also play an important role in maintaining your body weight. There are numerous hormones in our body that are directly or indirectly related to our weight. The hormonal imbalance can actually lead to obesity. Coconut oil aids the production of hormones that increase energy, improve digestion, reduce stress, and eventually burn away the excess fat.

3. Decreases Hunger & Burns Fat Faster

As it is a medium chain fatty acid, it forms ketone rapidly and reduces craving and hunger. Coconut oil aids the process of digestion and helps absorb nutrients faster which makes you feel less tired and therefore less hungry. It also regulates appetite and reduces stubborn belly fat.

4. Boosts Metabolism

Metabolism is the process in which break down of the compounds in our body takes place in order to obtain energy. Therefore, it determines how many calories you burn each day. Coconut oil, being a medium chain triglyceride, accelerates the process of metabolism. Increased metabolism means more energy and less accumulation of fat. Many studies have also shown that consuming coconut oil will increase the metabolic rate and will reduce both BMI and waist circumference.

5. Improves the Immune System

Some studies have shown that there is a correlation between the immune system and obesity. It may decrease the body’s response to antigens, cytokinin’s production, reduce macrophage, etc. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which possesses antimicrobial properties, therefore, eliminates the harmful pathogens from the body and helps improve the immune system of the body.

  • For a person weighing 90 to 130 lbs: 1 tbsp of oil before every meal, 3 times a day.

  • For a person above 180 lbs: 2 tbsp of the oil, 3 times a day.

Coconut Oil Tablets

Though the oil is easily available everywhere, you can also get it in the form of tablets and capsules. These capsules are made up of pure, virgin, refined, and organic coconut oil, out of which organic pills are the best ones. Some brands have started making gel based pills as well. These pills are portable and easily consumable and are equally effective as raw oil is. The daily dosage varies according to the weight of a person. Generally, a person can take 4-6 tablets a day, but one should always consult a doctor for an exact amount.

Note: Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with a high cholesterol level should consult the doctor for the correct dosage of coconut oil (or tablets, capsules, etc.) as an excessive use may harm their health.

How to Put Coconut Oil in Your Hair to Stop it From Going Gray, Thinning or Falling Out

Around the world, coconut oil is widely used and frequently preferred as a hair oil. Perhaps you should learn what makes this oil unique and why millions of people choose to use it before you begin using it for its many health benefits.

The sweet-smelling coconut oil is the only hair oil that many people who live along the coast of the world—that is, in regions where coconuts are abundant—know. These include regions like the Philippines, Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Indian Subcontinent, and sections of the Caribbean.

Coconut oil is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals which are good for the human body. However, coconut oil is not limited to hair; it is used in the preparation of cosmetic soaps and creams, and in Asian countries, it is also used for preparing various kinds of food and salads.

Coconut oil has been in use as hair oil for thousands of years, and it has shown remarkable results. Certain components in it keep the hair strong, nourished and protected from the effects of premature aging, like baldness and excessive hair loss. Let’s see what some of those benefits to hair are, and what components of coconut oil are responsible!

Benefits of Coconut Oil for Hair

Hair Loss: Coconut oil has been used since ancient times in India for grooming hair. Various remedies were prepared using herbs and coconut oil to prevent hair loss. One such remedy can be prepared in modern times by boiling sage leaves in coconut oil. This mixture can be applied to the scalp for the improvement of healthy hair, and its use will also prevent hair loss.

Applying a mixture of lime water and coconut oil can also provide relief from hair loss, as does the mixture of coconut oil and gooseberries. Boil the gooseberries in coconut oil and then apply it on the hair.

Hair Damage: The use of coconut oil on hair is thought to help to reduce protein loss in both damaged as well as undamaged hair. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid has a high affinity for hair protein and easily penetrates inside the hair shaft, which is due to its low molecular weight. It can be used for pre-wash or post-wash hair grooming.

Cooling Properties: The application of coconut oil on the head and scalp also has a cooling effect. It can cool and soothe people with hot heads, or those who suffer from severe scalp sweating.

Moisture Retention: Coconut oil has a high moisture retaining capacity, since it is not easily broken down nor evaporated, being very stable. By looking at how coconut oil actually seeps into the hair follicles it is clear that it can not only hold moisture in the hair but also allows more moisture in rather than blocking it, making it an excellent way to retain moisturized hair (3)!  This study also shows the great moisturizing benefits coconut oil has when compared to mineral oils. It is clear that using coconut oil as a moisturizer is a great alternative to chemically enhanced products!

Hair Conditioning: With its ability to stop hair from becoming more damaged when brushed or combed, by preventing the hair follicle from swelling (4) , coconut oil is a great treatment to use on hair before brushing.

Coconut oil is a better conditioner for hair than any synthetic one available in the market. Use of warm coconut oil helps in keeping hair shimmering and soft. Apply some warm oil at night and wash your hair the next morning. This can be repeated every few days for healthy, strong and conditioned hair.

Anti-Dandruff: Because coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids, including lauric acid and capric acid, it has strong antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. These properties could help target and kill the fungus and any viruses or bacteria that may exist (5).

Regular application of coconut oil can help you get rid of dandruff forever (6). Coconut oil mixed with lukewarm water and castor oil can also be effective in treating dandruff. Massage the scalp and hair with this mixture for ideal results.

Another home remedy for dandruff can be prepared by mixing coconut oil with sesame oil. Apply this mixture for about 30 minutes and then shampoo the hair.

Styling: Coconut oil can be a good styling oil for hair as well, as it melts on heating and then condenses when cooled. Therefore, when you apply it on your hair, it thins and spreads evenly due to the heat of the scalp. Soon afterward, as the hair comes in contact with air, the oil on the hair condenses, thus working as a styling gel or cream.

Lice Protection: Lice are a very common pest found in the hair and can cause embarrassment for anyone. They also have a tendency to come back again and again. There are many chemical products available for the treatment of lice, but unfortunately, they can also damage the scalp and hair due to their strong chemical components.

Combing wet hair with a fine comb is a good remedy for getting rid of lice but this may also damage the wet hair. However, if one coats the wet hair with coconut oil, it becomes much easier to comb and subsequently remove the lice. This study shows the effects that coconut oil can have on getting rid of annoying lice -and with good effect!

Hair Care for Dry Hair and Split Ends: For people with dry hair that is rough and thin, taking good care of your hair is a big concern. Coconut oil is a great way to moisturize the hair without causing further thinning or drying of the hair as it is able to penetrate the hair follicle (7).

Split ends and dry hair kind of come hand in hand and if you have a lot of them then it is advised to have a hair cut. However, if you only find a few but they annoy the living daylights out of you then the following natural hair remedy will give you smooth, split end-free hair in no time. Massage your hair with a mixture of coconut oil and almond oil for a few minutes; this will help in minimizing the split ends.

Hair Conditioning:  Hair conditioner can be easily prepared at home using coconut oil. It is not only effective; it also does not have side effects.  Many beauticians swear by it and say that applying a couple of tablespoons to your hair before sleeping at night then washing off in the morning is a miracle worker (8)!

Boils: Some people experience the condition of boils on the scalp, especially during the winter. This may also happen if exposed to heat or the sun for a long duration. It is important to keep both the hair and scalp clean, and occasional massaging of the hair with a mixture of coconut oil and olive oil may provide relief from the uncomfortable and unsightly problem of boils. However, if the problem persists, it is advisable to contact your health care specialist.

Coconut Oil in Shampoo

You may not be aware of this, but your shampoo likely contains coconut oil, at least in small amounts. Lately, people have come to understand how important natural oils are for hair nourishment. Oddly enough, over the past three decades or so, using oil on the hair was viewed as a sign of backwardness or ignorance. The majority of people believed that, particularly in India.

The excessive use of shampoo often results in drying up and breaking away from hair and total devastation of the health of the scalp. Commercially, using coconut oil in shampoos showed marvelous results and it was soon a widely accepted additive or pure form of hair care products.

Here is a good video on how to use coconut oil for hair care in an optimal way.

Finally, if you are not regularly using a reliable shampoo that contains coconut oil, you can always mix some coconut oil into your preferred shampoo and enjoy the results. For the best effect, make it an organic or herbal shampoo.

Apart from the uses of coconut oil listed above, it is important to keep hair clean, eat well, use good hair grooming products that have minimal side effects and use a good comb that does not break or damage the hair. Coconut oil is also a great, healthy alternative to use in cooking, it’s delicious and better for you than certain vegetable oils! Good Luck and Happy, Healthy Hair to Everyone!

We would love to hear your thoughts on that as well! Please send us your comments or questions.

The 2-Ingredient Coconut Milk Kefir Recipe that Heals the Gut and Relieves Bloating

The 2-Ingredient Coconut Milk Kefir Recipe that Heals the Gut and Relieves Bloating

The 2-Ingredient Coconut Milk Kefir Recipe that Heals the Gut and Relieves Bloating

Our gut's health directly affects our body's health, and the balance between good and bad bacteria in our gut determines the health of our gut. Your stomach is home to a diverse community of hundreds of species of bacteria. Our bodies actually contain more bacteria than there have ever been humans on earth.

The beneficial bacteria in our stomach aid in food digestion (especially with carbohydrates), boost immunity, thwart infections, and even have an impact on our mental capacity.

When we don't take proper care of our bodies, this priceless ecosystem is threatened. Our good bacteria are destroyed when we overindulge in alcohol and drugs, consume poor-quality food, get sick, get a parasite, and take antibiotics.

A good diet is the cornerstone of a healthy gut, but ingesting probiotic-rich foods and beverages as well as probiotic supplements is an easy, all-natural way to boost your gut's health.

What Is Kefir and Why Should We Drink It?

Unlike yoghurt, kefir can actually colonize the intestinal tract.

Coconut milk kefir is one of the easiest of fermented foods to make at home. You don’t need any fancy kitchen equipment or expensive health foods, just a few household items which are probably sitting in your kitchen as you read this.

So what are you waiting for? Grab yourself a glass jar, a coconut, some kefir grains and be on your way to gracious gut health in just 2 easy steps!

Kefir Grains…What Are They And Where Do I Find Them?

Kefir grains are combinations of living yeast and bacteria called “grains” however they are not a grain or related in any way to the grain family. They are a living organism and look like little cauliflower florets. Kefir grains are not always easy to come by, so if you can’t get a hold of them, we find a powdered starter culture such as Donna Gates’ Body Ecology’s Kefir Starter Kit works a treat!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 tablespoon kefir grains or kefir starter
  • 1-2 cups coconut milk (make your own, or use a carton / can of organic coconut milk without additives and sweeteners as they can be hard on the kefir grains)
  • Glass Jar
  • Mesh cloth
  • Rubber band

Directions

  1. Combine the kefir grains or kefir starter (as directed on the packet) with the coconut milk in a glass jar. Cover with a cloth secured with a rubber band and let it sit on your bench (a warm environment is best for fermenting) for 12-24 hours. Give your kefir a few shakes or stirs after about 12 hours.
  2. Once the coconut milk has thickened and has a slightly sour flavor, it has turned into kefir. Strain the mixture through a fine plastic strainer to remove the grains (you can re-use the grains later by storing them in a glass jar in the fridge). Store the kefir in the fridge and enjoy.

Hints:

  • Kefir doesn’t like metal, so never use a metal container to make kefir or a metal spoon to stir. This disrupts the process and the kefir won’t thicken. Use glass containers and wood or plastic spoons.
  • If your kefir doesn’t thicken within 24 hours, it might be that the temperature in your house isn’t warm enough.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Yeast Infection

How to Use Coconut Oil for Yeast Infection

How to Use Coconut Oil for Yeast Infection

Suffering from an itchy, painful yeast infection? Try using coconut oil to cure and further prevent yeast infections!

What is Coconut Oil?

Extracted from the meat of coconuts, coconut oil is a semisolid, fatty oil that is white or almost colorless. It is used in foods, soaps, and cosmetics and has numerous health and beauty benefits, including strong hair, skin, and immune systems.

What is a Yeast Infection?

An inflammation of the vagina that is marked by discomfort, severe itching, and discharge is called a yeast infection. It is brought on by a fungus called Candida, which is often found in trace amounts in the body and thrives when there is an imbalance in the immune system and hormones.

Coconut oil has been laboratory-proven to explode the nucleus of Candida yeast cells. It also controls irritation and reduces inflammation of the vaginal area.

  • Coconut oil is high in three active ingredients (lauric, capric, and caprylic acid) which have antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. These compounds target harmful bacteria while leaving friendly bacteria.
  • Caprylic acid breaks down the cell membrane which controls the yeast population and prevents it from proliferating and replicating itself.
  • Virgin coconut oil contains generous amount of lauric acid, a nutrient that strengthens and supports the body’s immune system to fight against the yeast fungus.
  • Sugar feeds Candida yeast cells. Coconut oil is a natural sweetener and acts as sugar substitute that controls the primary food source of growing fungal yeast. It also provides an instant energy to boost to the immune system.
  • Coconut oil is an antioxidant and effective agent in killing excess yeast and other fungal overgrowth in the body. It also aids in the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
  • Coconut acts as natural antibacterial and antifungal that naturally kills Candida yeast.
  • Coconut oil forms a non-irritating protective layer and helps heal yeast infection quickly by acting as a barrier against chafing irritated, sensitive skin.
  • Adding a moderate amount of coconut oil to your diet is considered safe as it contains unrefined fats easily converted into energy instead of storing as fat.

How To Use Coconut Oil For Yeast Infection?

Coconut oil fights fungal infection both internally and externally. Coconut oil’s anti-fungal properties helps cure the infection within a few hours to a few days depending on the severity of the infection. Try the following popular methods, which have minimal to no side effects, for treating yeast infection.

1. Coconut Oil In Diet

Incorporate 3 – 5 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil daily into your diet. Initially, start with a smaller dosage and increase gradually. See the following suggestions on how to do this.

  • Substitute coconut oil for butter on toast.
  • Add a teaspoon to coffee or stir some in oatmeal.
  • Consume a teaspoon of coconut oil before each meal.
  • Substitute coconut oil for other cooking oils as coconut oil does not break down into unhealthy trans fats when cooked in high temperatures.
  • Add traditional fermented food to your diet for added relief.

2. Coconut Oil Application

  • Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly. Use a hair dryer if the area is sensitive.
  • Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to the affected area.
  • Repeat 2 – 3 times daily until yeast infection is gone.

3. Coconut Oil Douche

  • Mix 3 – 4 tablespoons of coconut oil and 2 quarts of warm distilled water.
  • Douche with the solution.
  • Repeat daily until yeast infection is gone.
  • Alternately use a tampon dipped in coconut oil in place of the douche.

4. Coconut Oil with Cinnamon Oil

This process controls yeast growth and prevent yeast infections.

  • Mix equal amount of coconut oil and cinnamon oil.
  • Apply to the affected area.
  • Repeat regularly until yeast infection is gone.

5. Coconut Oil with Garlic Oil and Vitamin E

  • Mix a few drops of garlic oil and vitamin E and dilute it in coconut oil.
  • Apply to the affected area.
  • Repeat regularly until yeast infection is gone.

Coconut Oil Capsules For Yeast Infection:

Use coconut oil capsules in the place of coconut oil. They melt with body heat and are best used before going to sleep at night. Wear a pad in your underwear to collect the melted capsule and prevent leakage. Use 2 – 3 capsules nightly until yeast infection is gone.

Tips:

  • Always use organic virgin coconut oil which is natural and has most health benefits. Make sure not to use hydrogenated coconut oil as this destroys the beneficial attributes and makes it high in dangerous trans-fatty acids.
  • Coconut oil may also provide additional benefits during use such as shinier hair, healthier skin, lower cholesterol levels, and healthier immune system.

By using coconut oil, you can easily and naturally cure yeast infection and the accompanying itching and irritating symptoms.  Have you tried any of these methods? Do you know any other methods to treat yeast infections? Share your experience with us!

Other Remedies for Yeast Infections

Since we have seen the uses of coconut oil for yeast infections, here are some other remedies which are beneficial in treating yeast infection.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

The presence of some distinctive compounds in the vinegar helps control and get rid of yeast infection. 2 tablespoons diluted apple cider vinegar in a cup of warm water should be consumed twice daily. It can also be used in bath water which will relieve irritation and itching. When using vinegar for yeast infection, you should do it about 30 minutes.

2. Yogurt

Plain, unsweetened yogurt is beneficial as it contains friendly bacteria. Itching can be relieved by applying yogurt for 30 minutes or overnight on the affected area. Besides, yogurt can also be included in the diet. Tampon dipped in yogurt can be left in the vagina for 2 hours twice daily to rid of vagina yeast infection.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Due to the strong anti-fungal properties, it is an excellent remedy for yeast infections. When diluted with water, olive oil or almond oil, it can be applied on infected area, several times a day. This can also be used for vagina infection. Just put a few drops on a tampon and insert it in vagina for 2-3 hours twice daily. Please note that tea tree oil for yeast infection should not be used by pregnant women.

4. Olive Leaf Extract

This has antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in restoring the good bacteria in the body. Take chopped olive oil leaves in a glass jar, cover with vodka and store in dark place for 4 weeks. After straining, use the liquid on affected area around 3 times a day.

Coconut Oil and Lemon Mixture: It Turns Gray Hair Back to Its Natural Color

Coconut Oil and Lemon Mixture: It Turns Gray Hair Back to Its Natural Color

Coconut Oil and Lemon Mixture: It Turns Gray Hair Back to Its Natural Color

For many women, gray hairs are a nightmare since they are seen as the first symptom of aging. Women will therefore do anything to hide their gray hairs. Numerous items and hair dyes are available that can conceal gray hair. They have a huge variety of side effects, though, and their effects are only transient.

You should first be aware that several medical issues and bad dietary choices can lead to premature hair aging. For instance, hormonal changes, smoking, pollution, stress, the use of inappropriate hair products, persistent colds, sinusitis, and thyroid conditions may all contribute to this cosmetic issue. Low levels of melanin may also cause gray hairs to emerge.

So, instead of using products full of harsh chemicals, which do more harm than good, you can try some natural alternatives instead. The most important thing you should do is consume a healthy and nutritious diet. Moreover, you can try the following natural remedy which is based on two available and powerful ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • organic coconut oil (the amount will depend on the length of your hair)
  • 3 teaspoons organic lemon juice, freshly squeezed

Instructions:

You should mix the two ingredients until you get a homogeneous mixture. Then, apply the mixture to your hair and massage it into your scalp. Let it act for at least one hour. Finally, wash it off with a mild shampoo. Repeat this treatment once a week.

Why is this remedy so beneficial?

The two ingredients used in this remedy are one of the most versatile and beneficial nature gifts. Coconut oil is packed with anti-microbial properties, lauric acid, and medium-chain fatty acids, which can treat and improve the condition of your hair. Hence, coconut oil can condition the scalp, promote hair growth, strengthen the hair, treat damaged hair, and reverse gray hair. Moreover, it can fight dandruff and it leaves the hair smooth and soft.

On the other hand, lemon juice can prevent premature graying. Due to the vitamin B, vitamin C, and phosphorus content, lemon juice nourishes the hair and treats the cause of gray hair.

Ingredient Coconut Oil Fat Bombs for All-Day Energy

Ingredient Coconut Oil Fat Bombs for All-Day Energy

These energy-packed fat bombs made with coconut oil and only 5 ingredients melt in your tongue!

Healthy fats like coconut oil have emerged from hiding and are now prominent components of a diet high in nutrients, as the myth of low-fat diets has been widely debunked. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil are better absorbed by the body and can help fight diseases like heart disease. Additionally, coconut oil is sufficiently adaptable to be used in both savory foods like curries and sweet ones like brownies.

For this recipe, coconut oil acts as the glue that keeps everything soft and chewy. Best of all, these mini treats can be assembled quickly and easily!

Start by adding coconut oil, shredded coconut, honey and vanilla bean in a blender (real vanilla bean powder can be found in the seasoning section at most grocery stores). Pulse the ingredients until well combined and crumbly. Using a tablespoon, scoop out mixture and use your hands to form into round balls. Not to worry if the balls aren’t sticking together at this point–the mixture will harden when cooled. Pop the bombs into the freezer for 10 minutes and drizzle with melted dark chocolate.

The flavor of these bite-sized sweets is a mix of refreshing coconut and dark chocolate–similar to Mounds bars without all the sugar and processed ingredients. They make a great on-the-go snack when you need a midday energy boost or for those late night cravings.

By Using Coconut Oil You Will Be Able To Reverse Cavities And Heal Decomposed Teeth!

By Using Coconut Oil You Will Be Able To Reverse Cavities And Heal Decomposed Teeth!

By Using Coconut Oil You Will Be Able To Reverse Cavities And Heal Decomposed Teeth!

You are undoubtedly aware of the numerous health advantages of coconut oil, but you may not know that it also has significant advantages for your dental health.

According to research, it can be a great replacement for over-the-counter toothpaste varieties, the majority of which include chemicals and may irritate the mouth or have other negative consequences.

The state of one's teeth is crucial to overall health, and the numerous diseases that can occur in the mouth can result in conditions including stroke, dementia, heart problems, and respiratory illnesses. As a result, you should always give your dental health considerable attention.

Newest studies have shown that coconut oil is one of the best ingredients you can use to maintain your dental health at optimal levels and that it is much more effective that toothpaste.

A recent study conducted at the Athlone Institute has found that this oil is better than all other oils when it comes to keeping the teeth clean and healthy. This oil is an excellent antibacterial agent, as its digestive enzymes prevent bacteria growth in the mouth.

Streptococcus and S Mutans are acid-producing bacteria which are the main culprits for the decomposition of teeth in adults and children. They get energy from sugar and cause an acidic environment in the mouth, which demineralizes the tooth structure, and the tooth gets spoilt.

According to Dr. Damien Brady, the main researcher from Athlone Institute of Technology,

“Involving coconut oil with adjusted enzymes in the products of dental hygiene represents an interesting alternative to chemical additives, especially because it works at considerably reduced concentrations. Plus, with bigger antibiotic hostility, it is essential for us to pay attention in finding and using some new ways to fight against microbial infection.”

In order to avoid the harmful chemicals, people should turn to more natural variants of teeth cleaning. Toothpastes are rich in triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, fluoride, and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which might cause various health issues.

For instance, triclosan was linked to endocrine issues, and sodium lauryl sulfate was found to negatively affect the taste buds.

On the other hand, we will suggest a natural toothpaste recipe which contains coconut oil:

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 2-3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 15-30 drops of lemon, thieves, or peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients, and use the paste as any other.

Moreover, oil pulling is another way to protect your teeth and support dental health. You should swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth for about 5-20 minutes on an empty stomach.

Afterward, spit the oil, which will absorb the bacteria from the mouth, and leave the teeth clean, healthy, and white.

Cannabis Coconut Oil – Easy Recipe Combats Pain, Nausea, Seizures, and More

We observe the door opening to an unlimited vision of what this incredibly potent plant can do for our health as scientific research into the therapeutic properties of cannabis progresses in small steps.

There is no longer any doubt that cannabis has the ability to alleviate many of our ailments.

How can we use this information? Why, of course, manufacture cannabis coconut oil?

Fortunately, governments in North America are relaxing restrictions on marijuana use for medical purposes in light of recent findings, and it is getting simpler. Get some if you can, keep it in a dark, cold, dry area, and use it as needed.

How to Use Marijuana as Medicine

Combined with cold-pressed virgin coconut oil as a carrier, the possibilities for medical cannabis are almost limitless! Coconut oil in itself is a highly nutritious food and personal care salve.

Moisturizing and cleansing for the skin with antibacterials and antioxidants, coconut oil can also be used on hair to thicken and promote new growth. When eaten, it benefits every cell of your body. Coconut oil has been found to reduce “bad” cholesterol levels, boost metabolism, reduce inflammation and relieve pain, balance hormones, and promote brain and digestive health via its medium-chain fatty acids. It’s been found effective in combating depression and in killing cancer cells.

As a flavorful oil, it is a perfect versatile carrier for herbs and spices used medicinally.

Cannabis, on the other hand, has been used as a medicine for millennia to treat anxiety, asthma, pain, and nausea. One of its most important antioxidant effects is reducing inflammation in the body, which is always a precursor to illness and disease. Only in recent years has it been found that can be used for the treatment of Crohn’s disease and other immune system-related digestive disorders (like irritable bowel syndrome), cancer, post traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and more. It’s so potent because human cells contain receptors specifically for cannabinoids—even in the brain, with implications for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease.

Cannabis & Coconut Oil: a Virtual Panacea

As with all plants, there are many varieties of cannabis.

Knowing which is best for your target treatment will help you to choose the appropriate one. The two most active phytochemicals in marijuana are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). They are fat soluble, which is another reason that coconut oil is an ideal delivery partner.

THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis, CBD is not.

Marijuana (Latin: cannabis sativa) strains high in THC are better for asthma, pain, nausea, digestive and sleep disorders, and glaucoma:

“Some cannabinoid agonists (WIN 55212-2, anandamide) have demonstrated, in experimental studies, to act as «ideal drugs» in the management of glaucoma, as they have been shown to have good tolerability after topical application, efficiently reduce intraocular pressure, and behave as neuroprotectors on retinal ganglion cells.” (1).

Higher concentrations of CBD have better results for the treatment of cancer, tumors, chronic pain, seizures, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and psychological and neurological disorders.

“CBD seems to offer natural protection against the marijuana high. Numerous studies suggest that CBD acts to reduce the intoxicating effects of THC, such as memory impairment and paranoia. CBD also appears to counteract the sleep-inducing effects of THC, which may explain why some strains of cannabis are known to increase alertness. Both CBD and THC have been found to present no risk of lethal overdose. However, to reduce potential side effects, medical users may be better off using cannabis with higher levels of CBD.”(2)

Sativa family flowers contain higher levels of CBD and the indica varieties are higher in THC. Raw cannabis is not psychoactive; heating it causes a chemical reaction in which the tetrahydrocannbinolic acid (THCA) in cannabis loses a carbon atom, forming THC. By decarboxlyating marijuana before use in a tincture, skin balm, or food, you transform the active ingredient to get its most protective effects; THC more readily attaches to cannabinoid receptors in the body than THCA.

Making coconut cannabis oil is easy; finding the right plant variety may require some experimentation, as everyone’s personal body chemistry is unique.

Regardless of which variety you choose, you are doing a good thing to support overall health.

It is interesting to note that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has held patents on “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” for almost twenty years (3).

If you’re curious about wanting to give it a try, here’s a simple recipe.

The first step in making this medicine is the process of decarboxylation—the chemistry term for heating marijuana to release its THC.

Preparing The Cannabis

Heating up your cannabis in a process called Decarboxylation actives the healing compounds in the cannabis.

You’ll Need:

  • One ounce of cannabis buds
  • Parchment paper
  • A baking sheet

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 240°F/115°C.
  2. Break up the cannabis buds into smaller pieces with your hands.
  3. Spread a single layer on a parchment-lines rimmed baking sheet. The sheet should be covered with the marijuana with no empty spaces.
  4. Bake the cannabis 30-40 minutes, tossing every 10 minutes so that it toasts evenly.
  5. When the cannabis has dried and darkened in color to a light to medium brown, remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the cannabis to cool. It should be crumbly when properly dried.
  6. In a food processor or blender, pulse the cannabis until it is coarsely ground (not a fine powder). Store it in an airtight glass container and use as needed to make your medicines.

Preparing the Oil

Ingredients:

  • 1 gram decarboxylated marijuana
  • 1 ounce cold-pressed virgin coconut oil

(Amounts can be adjusted to this ratio.)

Instructions:

  1. Place measured crushed marijuana in a sturdy glass jar and add coconut oil. Tightly fit the jar’s lid and place in a saucepan full of water.
  2. Slowly heat the water on low on the stovetop—keeping it below boiling—for 60 minutes. (Doing so keeps the oil from overheating.)
  3. Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain solids from the oil into another sturdy glass jar. Squeeze the liquid from the cannabis into the oil.
  4. The cannabis coconut oil is now ready to be eaten or used as a topical lotion. The removed solids can be eaten as well, baked or cooked in any recipe as any other herb.
